A family relocating to the UK needs an immigration strategy covering each person's own nationality, current status, proposed route, work or study rights, travel plans and future settlement position. A successful visa application for 1 family member does not automatically grant or extend permission for a partner, child or other dependant.

Families rarely relocate for immigration reasons alone. The move may arise from a business, senior appointment, investment, education, family connection or a change in personal circumstances. The immigration route has to sit inside that wider plan.

A route that works for the principal applicant may restrict a partner, exclude a dependant, create difficult travel expectations or produce a settlement timetable inconsistent with the family’s objective. The answer should be designed household-by-household, not applicant-by-applicant.

Tax, property, employment, education and succession advice may also be needed. Those disciplines should be coordinated, while their distinct professional boundaries remain clear.

01 · Household map

Begin with people, status and objectives.

The first schedule should identify every family member, nationality, existing UK or overseas status, relationship, age, custody or parental responsibility where relevant, intended activity and desired timing. It should also record prior refusals, immigration breaches or complex residence histories.

The definition of a dependant differs across contexts, and adult children or non-married partners may require closer analysis. A family relationship that is clear socially is not always evidenced in the way the Immigration Rules require.

02 · Route architecture

The principal applicant is a strategic choice.

The most obvious principal applicant is not always the best. A founder, senior employee, recognised expert or British or settled family member may open different routes with different requirements and flexibility. The family should compare qualifying prospects, dependency, work permission, cost, timing and settlement.

Some work routes allow dependant family members; family routes have their own relationship and financial requirements; Global Talent may offer independence from an employer. Current rules and dependant restrictions must be checked for the specific route and occupation.

03 · Evidence and sequencing

Relocation fails at the joins between applications.

Marriage or partnership evidence, birth records, consent, accommodation, finances, English-language material and route-specific documents can require time to obtain, translate or legalise. Names and dates should be reconciled before filing.

Applications should be sequenced around where people are permitted to apply, passport availability, travel plans and dependency on another decision. A family should not assume that everyone must apply together or that separating applications is harmless. The lawful and practical sequence is route-specific.

04 · Residence and travel

Admission is the beginning of the residence record.

If settlement or nationality is a possible objective, the family should understand from the outset how the route treats qualifying residence, absences, extensions and changes of category. Travel records should be maintained contemporaneously rather than reconstructed years later.

Different family members may reach settlement at different times. Children can age into a different position, employment can end and a principal applicant can change route. Periodic reviews help identify whether the original architecture continues to serve the household.

05 · Coordinated advice

Immigration should meet the rest of the family plan.

UK residence can engage tax, wealth, trust, corporate, employment, property and succession questions. Immigration counsel should identify when those issues arise and coordinate with the relevant regulated advisers, without presenting immigration analysis as tax or financial advice.

Confidentiality and information flow matter, particularly for family offices and multi-jurisdictional households. A clear adviser map, decision timetable and single verified fact base can reduce duplication and prevent one workstream from undermining another.

The strongest or most flexible route may belong to a different family member than expected. Compare eligibility, work rights, route dependency, cost, travel and settlement before deciding.

03When should settlement planning begin?+

At the start of the relocation if settlement may matter. Route choice, absences, changes of category and record keeping can affect the later position.

04Does immigration advice cover UK tax and property?+
