A player signing, coaching appointment, competition or transfer is governed by a sporting timetable. The immigration position must connect eligibility, governing body endorsement, sponsorship, permission and travel without placing the contract or season at risk.

The International Sportsperson route passes through 3 distinct gateways: the relevant governing body must endorse the sporting proposition, the UK organisation must be authorised to sponsor it and the individual must obtain the correct immigration permission.
The UK sporting organisation requires the correct sponsor authority. Its own governing body support, licence scope, rating and Certificate of Sponsorship must be controlled separately from the individual endorsement.
The route distinguishes permission of 12 months or less from a longer grant. English language, points, sponsorship length and the maximum grant period change with the period sought.
Settlement can be available after 5 qualifying years. Under the Rules reviewed on 29 July 2026, the sponsor must still require the individual and confirm qualifying salary of at least £35,800 a year.
The sporting instruction
The visa is the final stage, not the first.
The threshold belongs to the sport.
Reputation, contract value and international experience provide context. Eligibility is still decided under the criteria published for the relevant sport, territory, role and competition level.
Club and individual approvals are separate.
A club may require governing body endorsement to obtain the relevant sponsor licence. The athlete or coach needs a distinct endorsement before a valid Certificate of Sponsorship can be assigned.
Dates are part of the legal analysis.
Endorsement validity, Certificate of Sponsorship dates, contract, registration, travel and permission must support the same timetable. A strong sporting case can still fail through sequence.
Movement changes the immigration position.
A loan, permanent transfer, release, injury, contract variation or change of role can engage different sponsorship and reporting consequences. The sporting step should not be completed before the immigration effect is understood.

The legal route should be planned around the real sporting event: registration, pre-season, competition, transfer, appointment or contract start. Each approval then has a defined owner and deadline.

Identify what the athlete, coach, club or governing organisation needs to achieve, where the activity occurs and the last date on which delay can be absorbed.

Confirm the approved body, territory, role, current endorsement criteria, evidential route, validity period and any available review or exception mechanism.

Check the club or organisation’s eligibility, governing body support, sponsor licence route, rating, key personnel, allocation and capacity to perform continuing duties.
- 04Endorsement, CoS and permission
Sequence the individual endorsement, Certificate of Sponsorship and immigration application. Reconcile the role, salary, dates, work locations and unique endorsement reference throughout.
- 05Contract, travel and future position
Coordinate registration, employment, entry, dependants and travel, then map foreseeable loans, transfers, extensions and settlement before the initial grant becomes restrictive.

01Who qualifies for the International Sportsperson route?+
The route is for an elite sportsperson or qualified sports coach who is internationally established and can make a significant contribution to the development of their sport at its highest level in the UK. The current criteria of the relevant approved governing body determine how that threshold is applied.
02Is a governing body endorsement always required?+
It is a mandatory gateway for an International Sportsperson application. The UK organisation may also need a separate governing body endorsement for its sponsor licence. The 2 processes should not be conflated.
03Can a club assign a Certificate of Sponsorship before endorsement?+
No. Sponsor guidance requires a current individual governing body endorsement before a valid Certificate of Sponsorship is assigned. Assigning one without the endorsement can place the sponsor licence at risk.
04What changes where permission is sought for more than 12 months?+
An application exceeding 12 months requires 80 points, including English language at A1 in speaking and listening unless an exemption applies. The maximum grant is ordinarily the shorter of the sponsored period plus 14 days and 3 years.
05What happens when a player moves club?+
A permanent transfer requires the previous sponsor to report the end of sponsorship. The new club must hold the correct licence, obtain the required endorsement and sponsor a fresh application. Permission must be granted before the player starts playing for the new club. A genuine loan can be treated differently where the governing body permits it and the reporting and continuing sponsor duties are satisfied.
06Can an athlete enter as a visitor for a trial or competition?+
Specified competitions, trials, training and other sporting activities can fall within the Visitor rules. The actual activity, organiser, payment and relationship with any UK club must be tested. A short stay is not automatically a visit.
07Can the International Sportsperson route lead to settlement?+
Yes. The principal applicant can potentially qualify after 5 years on eligible routes and must have held International Sportsperson permission exceeding 12 months at some point in that period. Continuing sponsorship, salary, residence, English language and knowledge of life requirements also apply.
08Can partners and children accompany an International Sportsperson?+
A qualifying partner and children can apply as dependants. Their applications, work or study position, travel, residence and settlement timetable should be considered separately from the principal applicant’s contract cycle.
