For UK employers

Sponsor licence applications

A sponsor licence application is an application for continuing regulatory responsibility—not simply permission to recruit. The organisation, evidence and operating controls must be credible together.

Three questions to settle early.

01

Prove the organisation before describing the vacancy.

The Home Office can examine whether the organisation is genuine, operating lawfully in the UK and capable of meeting sponsor duties. Corporate documents, trading evidence, ownership, premises, staffing and the proposed recruitment model should tell a consistent story.

02

Design the control that will exist after approval.

Key personnel, right-to-work checks, absence monitoring, document retention and escalation routes should be settled before the application is submitted. A licence obtained without an operating system can create immediate exposure.

03

Prepare for questions, not only documents.

The specified evidence is the minimum evidential gateway. A strong application also anticipates questions about the business, the roles to be sponsored, salary, genuine vacancies and who will exercise day-to-day control of the licence.

Before the process begins.

01How many documents are needed for a sponsor licence application?+

The answer depends on the organisation and licence route. Appendix A identifies mandatory and acceptable documents, including circumstances where fewer documents may be required. The current version must be checked for the applicant organisation.

02Can a new or early-stage business apply?+

Potentially. An early-stage organisation requires particularly clear evidence of its UK presence, lawful activity, funding, operating plan, genuine recruitment need and ability to discharge sponsor duties.

03Can the Home Office visit before granting the licence?+

Yes. A pre-licence compliance check can test whether the organisation is genuine and capable of meeting its duties. Systems should therefore operate in practice, not exist only as draft policies.

04Does a sponsor licence guarantee a worker visa?+

No. The licence permits the organisation to sponsor within its scope. Each role, Certificate of Sponsorship and worker must separately meet the relevant route requirements.
