Changing route does not necessarily restart the qualifying period.
Existing Rules analysis under GT 8 to GT 14 and Appendix Continuous Residence. Policy announcements do not replace the operative Rules. Recheck the provisions and commencement dates before applying.
The position
Does Skilled Worker time count towards Global Talent ILR?
Yes. GT 11.3 permits qualifying Skilled Worker permission held as a main applicant to be combined with Global Talent permission for settlement. A qualifying 3 year Global Talent pathway can therefore use earlier Skilled Worker residence. The applicant must first have, or have last been granted, Global Talent permission and meet its earnings, continuous residence and other settlement requirements. An endorsement alone is insufficient.
- Some Global Talent pathways require 5 years; the label Exceptional Promise does not produce the same period in every field.
- Student, Graduate and dependant permission are not qualifying main-applicant routes under GT 11.3.
- A partner's settlement period is assessed separately.
A researcher approaching 3 years on Skilled Worker permission receives an opportunity to move into a qualifying Global Talent pathway. A technology executive considering the same change assumes the settlement clock must start again. Both need the residence history tested before deciding whether another sponsored extension is necessary.
The route decision should begin with 2 calculations: the earliest defensible settlement date if the person stays sponsored, and the earliest defensible date after a Global Talent grant. Endorsement prospects, fees, current work restrictions and family timing then determine whether the difference is commercially useful. The shortest theoretical period is not always the strongest instruction.
01 / Residence
Count the qualifying permissions before choosing the next application.
GT 11.3 expressly includes Skilled Worker in the routes which may be combined. It also lists Global Talent, Innovator Founder, T2 Minister of Religion, International Sportsperson, qualifying Tier 1 routes, Scale-up and Representative of an Overseas Business. It excludes time held as a dependant from this main-applicant calculation. That is a defined list, not a rule that every lawful day in the UK counts.
Build the chronology from grant notices, entry records, application dates and travel. Mark the legal capacity for each period. Someone who previously held Graduate permission and then became a Skilled Worker should not simply count from graduation or first arrival. A person moving from dependant permission requires a different calculation even if they have worked in the same specialist role for years.
The practical deliverable is a dated residence schedule identifying each included period and the rule supporting it. A spreadsheet headed 'years in the UK' conceals precisely the distinctions that can determine refusal. Where gaps or disputed status arise, resolve those before presenting an accelerated date to the client.
02 / Pathway
Confirm whether the relevant Global Talent period is 3 or 5 years.
GT 11.1 provides the 3 year period for endorsement by the Royal Society, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering or UKRI; for Exceptional Talent endorsed by Arts Council England or Tech Nation; and for the listed prestigious-prize basis. GT 11.2 sets 5 years for Exceptional Promise endorsed by Arts Council England or Tech Nation. A research Promise case should therefore not be assigned the arts or digital technology Promise period merely because the same adjective appears in both.
The pathway must be justified by the person's actual work and evidence. An attractive settlement period is not a reason to force a digital technology profile into a research category or to claim established leadership where the record supports potential. Assess the endorsement case on its own merits, then calculate the consequence of the category that can genuinely be established.
03 / Application sequence
Endorsement does not permit a direct jump from Skilled Worker to Global Talent settlement.
GT 8.3 requires the settlement applicant to have, or have last been granted, permission on the Global Talent route. A favourable endorsement decision does not itself change the worker's immigration permission. An applicant still holding only Skilled Worker permission cannot bypass the Global Talent permission stage by relying on an endorsement letter and 3 years of residence.
Plan endorsement, permission and settlement as separate decisions. The switching guidance requires an endorsed applicant to apply for permission within 3 months of endorsement. Check current expiry and application validity independently: an endorsement request alone is not a leave application preserving immigration permission. Existing Skilled Worker conditions remain relevant until the immigration position actually changes.
Consider a hypothetical researcher with 2 years of qualifying Skilled Worker residence who then receives Global Talent permission through a 3 year pathway. A further qualifying year may complete the residence period. It does not remove the earnings, absence, suitability, language or Life in the UK requirements. This is an illustration of aggregation, not a promised outcome or a client result.
04 / Evidence
A completed residence period still needs a qualifying Global Talent earnings record.
GT 10.2 requires money earned in the UK during the last period of permission in the relevant endorsed field or the field related to the eligible prize. Someone who has already accumulated enough qualifying residence should not treat a new Global Talent grant as an immediate passport to settlement without examining that requirement. Earlier sponsored salary alone does not establish that every condition of a later application is met.
Agree the evidence plan before fixing the switch date: the engagement, the work actually performed, payment, and the connection to the endorsed field. Retain the contract, records of delivery and reliable financial evidence as appropriate. A last-minute document saying only that the applicant is talented does not prove an earnings proposition. Our separate earnings analysis examines the territorial and evidential questions in more detail.
05 / Continuity
Aggregation does not erase the travel history.
Appendix Continuous Residence governs continuity and permitted absences. The ordinary limit is 180 days in any 12 month period, subject to the applicable exceptions and transitional provisions. Assess the entire qualifying period, not just travel after the new visa. Record both departure and return dates and the evidence for any exception relied upon.
Research exceptions require their own provision-specific analysis. Do not assume that a later research endorsement retrospectively exempts every earlier business trip while sponsored. Identify the permission, purpose and rule applicable to the particular absence. An unsupported exception can invalidate a settlement timetable which appears compelling on the headline dates.
06 / Decision
Compare the complete cost and risk of switching with staying sponsored.
For a credible 3 year candidate, earlier settlement may have substantial value: reduced dependence on one employer and greater freedom over future work. A 5 year Global Talent candidate may obtain flexibility without bringing the residence date forward. For a person already close to a sound Skilled Worker settlement application, commissioning a new endorsement exercise may add cost and execution risk without enough benefit.
Ask the employer and individual different questions. The employer needs a reliable work and retention plan. The individual needs independent advice about route choice, fees, departure from employment and family status. Define the client and any conflict before treating those interests as identical. No client should resign on the assumption that endorsement has already conferred work freedom.
Review the family's separate permissions and expiry dates. A principal's accelerated settlement does not accelerate the partner's qualifying period or automatically vary a child's status. The linked partner analysis should inform the household plan rather than being discovered after the principal's application is ready.
07 / Filing control
Fix the application date only after the remaining gates have been tested.
Check the current endorsement or prize position, suitability, residence, earnings, English language and Life in the UK requirements. The published GT 13.1 distinguishes applications before 26 March 2027 from those on or after that date, when the specified English level moves from B1 to B2 unless exempt. That is a commencement provision requiring timetable control, separate from any wider settlement policy proposal.
Prepare a short advice record setting out the route comparison, evidential gaps, costs and events that require the timetable to be revised. Those events include endorsement delay, a changed role, a material absence, expiry or a change in the Rules. The purpose is a defensible decision on the person's actual record, not a speculative race to the shortest advertised period.

Practical questions.
Does switching from Skilled Worker to Global Talent reset ILR?
Not necessarily. GT 11.3 allows qualifying main-applicant Skilled Worker time to count towards Global Talent settlement. The relevant qualifying period and all remaining requirements still apply.
Can I apply for Global Talent ILR as soon as I receive endorsement?
Endorsement alone is insufficient. GT 8.3 requires Global Talent permission to have been granted, and the earnings and remaining settlement requirements must also be met.
Does Graduate visa time count towards the Global Talent qualifying period?
Graduate permission is not a route listed in GT 11.3. Lawful residence and qualifying residence under this settlement route are different questions.
Does every Exceptional Promise applicant need 5 years?
No. The endorsing body and pathway matter. GT 11.2 sets 5 years for Arts Council England or Tech Nation Exceptional Promise; the research-body pathways in GT 11.1 have a 3 year period.
