International Sportsperson: the route from endorsement to permission
The route contains three connected approvals: the sport-specific endorsement, the club’s sponsorship decision and the individual immigration application. A failure to align them can derail the sporting timetable.

The governing body decides the sporting threshold.
The relevant Home Office-approved governing body applies criteria agreed for that sport. The endorsement must confirm the individual’s standing and expected contribution at the highest level in the UK.
Endorsement criteria and validity periods can differ by sport. The assessment should begin with the current criteria rather than a general assumption based on reputation, contract value or previous international participation.

The club and role must be capable of sponsorship.
The UK organisation must hold the correct sponsor licence and comply with the route-specific sponsor guidance. A governing-body endorsement for the organisation may be required before it can obtain the relevant licence.
The worker’s endorsement, Certificate of Sponsorship, contract and intended role should correspond. A club must not assign a Certificate of Sponsorship without the required current endorsement.

Permission length changes the analysis.
The route distinguishes applications for 12 months or less from applications for a longer period. Points, English-language requirements, grant length and longer-term planning should be checked against the period genuinely required.
Dependants and settlement may be available, but the family and residence strategy should be considered before a short-term sporting decision creates a different long-term result.

01Can a club assign the CoS before endorsement?+
No. The sponsor guidance requires a current governing-body endorsement before a valid Certificate of Sponsorship is assigned.
02Can a visitor switch into the route?+
There is a limited exception for certain visitors who have undertaken permitted sporting activities. The individual facts and current switching provisions require review.
03Can the route be extended?+
Potentially, but continuing sponsorship, endorsement and the requirements applying at the new application date must be met.
