A practical guide for UK sports clubs applying for and maintaining an International Sportsperson sponsor licence.

The organisation requires its own governing-body support.

Before applying for the relevant sponsor licence, a sporting organisation should check whether it needs an endorsement from the Home Office-approved governing body. Appendix A and the route-specific guidance set out the supporting position.

Ownership, operating status, league or competition position and the organisation’s ability to sponsor responsibly should be resolved before the application is made.

General sponsor controls still apply.

Key personnel, reporting, record keeping, right-to-work checks and cooperation duties apply alongside the sporting requirements. Player registration systems do not replace Sponsor Management System responsibilities.

The club needs a clear owner for immigration information across recruitment, football or sporting operations, HR, payroll, medical absence and transfers.

Sport creates distinct compliance events.

Loans, transfers, changes of club, contract variation, release, injury, extended absence and work with another organisation may affect sponsorship. The immigration consequence should be assessed before the sporting step is completed.

A compliance visit can test governing-body endorsements for the sponsor and individual workers as well as the underlying sponsor controls.

Questions to answer before taking the next step.

01Obtain organisation endorsement where required

02Select suitable key personnel

03Map sporting events to SMS reporting

04Reconcile registration, contract and CoS data

05Retain endorsements and recruitment evidence

06Prepare for sport-specific compliance checks

Professional sportspersons and coaches are subject to specific immigration restrictions and route requirements. The correct licence and route must be identified for the role.

02Who should operate the SMS?+

The named key personnel must satisfy the sponsor requirements and have appropriate authority and control. Sporting operations can provide information, but responsibility should remain clearly allocated.

03Does a loan end sponsorship?+

The route-specific guidance addresses loans and club changes. The structure, length and continuing employment position should be reviewed before the move.
