How UK sports governing body endorsements interact with sponsor licences, Certificates of Sponsorship and International Sportsperson applications.
01
Two endorsement questions can arise.
A sporting organisation may need approval from the relevant governing body for its sponsor-licence application. The individual athlete or coach requires a separate endorsement under the published criteria for that sport.
The organisation and individual processes should not be conflated. Each has its own evidence, reference and validity considerations.
02
The criteria are sport-specific.
Appendix Sports Governing Bodies identifies the approved bodies and links to the relevant criteria. International appearances, league level, coaching qualifications, rankings and prospective contribution may be treated differently across sports.
The evidence should be constructed around the exact criterion relied upon. General testimonials may carry limited weight if they do not address the required sporting proposition.
03
Validity controls sponsorship timing.
A Certificate of Sponsorship cannot exceed the period covered by the endorsement. Where an endorsement is issued for a shorter period than the contract, renewal and immigration timing should be planned before permission expires.
The endorsement reference must be recorded correctly and the letter retained. Errors at this junction can affect the club as well as the individual application.
