Classify what will actually happen in the UK.
The visitor rules permit specified sporting activities, which can include tournaments, events, trials, short periods of training and certain promotional activity. The precise activity, organiser, payment and relationship with a UK club matter.
A label such as ‘trial’ or ‘competition’ is not conclusive if the person will in substance fill a role or undertake work outside the permitted activity.

Payment requires separate attention.
Professional sportspersons can undertake certain permitted paid engagements when invited by a qualifying UK organisation, agent or broadcaster and when the engagement relates directly to their profession.
The conditions, timing and visitor eligibility should be documented. General payment by a UK source is not automatically permissible merely because the stay is short.

Entry planning remains important for non-visa nationals.
A person who does not need a visit visa can still be questioned at the border and must satisfy the visitor rules. ETA requirements, invitation documents, itinerary, funding and return plans should be checked before travel.
Where the activity amounts to employment or sits outside visitor permission, an appropriate sponsored route should be considered instead.
