Sport and mobility

Sports immigration

A sporting career moves to a competitive timetable. Immigration strategy must align eligibility, endorsement, sponsorship, employment and travel without losing sight of the season.

Discuss your matter

Strategy before process.

International Sportsperson, governing body endorsement and sponsor advice for athletes, coaches, clubs and the professional teams around them.

The first task is to identify the legal and evidential issues that will determine the outcome. Advice is then organised around the objective, the available time and the wider commercial or personal context.

Where a matter carries material risk, the difficult points are tested at the beginning. This allows the route, evidence and execution plan to be settled before unnecessary cost or commitment is incurred.

What clients need to know before deciding.

01Who can use the International Sportsperson route?+

The route is for elite sportspersons and qualified sports coaches who are internationally established and whose employment will develop their sport at the highest level in the UK. The relevant governing body and the current Immigration Rules determine the precise endorsement and route requirements.

02What is a sports governing body endorsement?+

It is confirmation from the Home Office-approved governing body that the individual and proposed role meet the sport-specific criteria. The endorsement is distinct from sponsorship and the visa application, so the sequence and evidence should be planned together.

03Can a UK club sponsor an overseas athlete or coach?+

Potentially, where the club holds the appropriate sponsor licence, the individual and role satisfy the route, and the relevant governing body endorsement is obtained. Sponsor duties continue after immigration permission is granted.

04Can you coordinate with an athlete's agent, club or existing advisers?+

Yes. Immigration advice can be scoped alongside the club, agent, employment team and other sports lawyers so that responsibility, confidentiality and the sporting timetable remain clear.
